"Beginning to work at the age of ten, in 1891, Foster labored in the lumber, farm, construction, chemical and transport industries. At times a sailor and a hobo, he soon became a champion in labor's cause, leading countless struggles, including major national strikes and organizing drives and becoming the outstanding leader of the left in the labor movement. He drew upon his personal experiences to write these amusing, dramatic and instructive sketches of his life as a worker for over half a century."
